The limited participation of women in professional life until mid 19th century is a consequence of restrictive legal regulations as well as social, economic, cultural and political barriers. Although the number of women has increased steadily over the years, as in other professions gender based stratification can also be observed in the legal profession. In Turkey, this stratification has been observed between different occupations in the field of law as well as in the distribution of power positions within the same occupation. This article offers an assessment of the limited participation of women in professional life with a focus on the legal profession accompanied by specific examples from Turkey.
